What happened: The Lakers are elevating Zach Guthrie from South Bay G League head coach to an assistant coaching role on JJ Redick's staff, with a focus on player development, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania. Guthrie guided South Bay to the G League's best record last season.

Why it matters: The hire keeps the Lakers' development pipeline in-house, moving up the same Zach Guthrie who ran South Bay to the G League's best record rather than bringing in an outside voice. It also fills out Redick's coaching staff as he heads into his second season running the Lakers bench.

By the numbers: South Bay finished last season with the best record in the G League under Guthrie.

What to watch: Guthrie is expected to join Redick's staff for the 2026-27 season; the Lakers have not announced further staff moves.
