What happened: Toronto Maple Leafs lost their latest game, falling to 5-13-5 in their last 23 outings with just four regulation wins in 26. No other NHL team has fared worse over that span, per reporter James Mirtle. The skid follows post-Olympic break struggles including six- and seven-game losing streaks.

Why it matters: Ottawa and Islanders; Despite ~70 points and eight worse teams, Leafs trail wild-card spots by 10 points (BOS/DET) with ~14 games left. Historical crash risks off-season upheaval.

What to watch: Monitor next games for momentum shift; track wild-card race and potential injury/roster news amid fading playoff hopes.
