What happened: Sarnia dealt the 2024 second-round pick to Sault Ste. Marie on Dec. 8 for a prospect and five picks. After two seasons as captain, he said navigating prolonged slumps helped him mature and manage the puck more effectively.

Why it matters: The move gave Fischer his first playoff experience since Sarnia's 2023 conference-final run. His three-year entry-level contract now positions him to compete for a professional role in 2026-27.

By the numbers: Fischer totaled 44 points in 65 OHL regular-season games last season: 18 in 26 games for Sarnia and 26 in 39 for Sault Ste. Marie. He added one goal and five assists across 10 playoff games.

What to watch: Training camp will determine whether Fischer begins the season in the AHL. His puck management and offensive decision-making will be central to that evaluation.
