What happened: Auston Matthews and Gavin McKenna spent time with Doug Gilmour and Wendel Clark at a golf outing Tuesday. The get-together paired two current headliners with two longtime NHL names as preseason attention builds around McKenna's arrival.

Why it matters: The appearance ties Matthews and McKenna to Doug Gilmour, giving the preseason another bridge between one generation and the next. McKenna arrives with outsized attention after going No. 1, so even light public appearances around established stars carry extra weight this month.

What to watch: Training camp will show how quickly McKenna turns offseason buzz into preseason reps. Matthews' place as the standard-setter will remain part of that storyline.
