What happened: Nikita Kucherov has requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning, ESPN reported Friday. Kucherov has informed the organization and his teammates that he does not intend to sign a contract extension in Tampa Bay.

Why it matters: A departure would mark the end of an era for Tampa Bay, where Kucherov won two Stanley Cups and claimed the 2026 Hart Trophy for his second NHL MVP honor. Any potential deal will reshape the contender landscape across the league as rival front offices assess the assets required to acquire an elite scorer.

What to watch: Tampa Bay hosts the Winnipeg Jets on Friday night as the organization addresses the fallout from the request. Front offices across the league are expected to gauge the asking price immediately.
