What happened: Officials launched the 10-year Rwanda deal Tuesday in Kigali with Stefano Domenicali, Paul Kagame and Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The Bugesera circuit sits 25 miles south of the capital beside a new international airport development. The last African round was South Africa in 1993.

Why it matters: Liberty Media has pursued an African round since buying the sport at the start of 2017. Rwanda consolidated financing behind one plan while Morocco lacked funds and South Africa split across four rival bids in three locations. The return opens an untapped audience estimated at 100 million people.

By the numbers: Term is 10 years from the early 2030s after a 33-year absence since 1993. Planned layout is about 6km with 17 corners and nearly 200m of elevation change. Bugesera site lies 25 miles south of Kigali.

What to watch: The Alex Wurz design faces further consultation with teams and drivers before final approval. Insiders expect the greenfield site complete by 2030 before a calendar slot is assigned.
