What happened: The Buffalo Sabres defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-1 in preseason action. Following the victory, Lindy Ruff confirmed Olen Zellweger sustained a concussion. Mattias Samuelsson will undergo further medical evaluation.

Why it matters: The sudden loss of two defensemen disrupts the Buffalo Sabres as they prepare for the upcoming 2025-26 NHL season. The team must now test alternative defensive pairings during the remainder of training camp. The absences thin the blue line depth ahead of opening night.

What to watch: Samuelsson awaits further evaluation to determine his status. The team will adjust its defensive rotations for the next preseason matchup.
