What happened: Sandro Tonali is set to join Tottenham, completing a move first reported in mid-June. Manager Roberto De Zerbi pushed for the Italy midfielder to anchor his midfield, and the two sides agreed personal terms in late June before the deal firmed up.

Why it matters: The signing gives De Zerbi the ball-winning midfielder he wanted to raise Tottenham's level heading into the new season. It also settles a competitive pursuit that had earlier been framed as a blow to Arsenal, who were among the clubs linked to the same player.

What to watch: Watch for the official club announcement, confirmation of the transfer fee, and the medical needed to formally complete the deal.
