What happened: Max Scherzer recorded career strikeout No. 3,516 to take sole possession of 10th place on MLB's all-time list. He had tied the mark with his third strikeout of the game.

Why it matters: The milestone came less than two months after Scherzer became the 11th MLB pitcher to reach 3,500 strikeouts. It extends his climb after returning from the 15-day injured list in July.

What to watch: Scherzer's next start will offer his first chance to build on the milestone.
