What happened: Restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson prefers to be traded by the Detroit Red Wings. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the player and the team are not currently talking amid an ongoing contract stalemate.

Why it matters: The preference escalates the standoff between Detroit and the prospect as the regular season approaches. Edvinsson remains in Sweden without a new deal, despite the organization holding available salary cap space to facilitate an extension.

What to watch: Watch to see if the Red Wings engage in trade discussions with interested teams or attempt to re-open negotiations.
