What happened: The Detroit Tigers have hired former veteran catcher Martín Maldonado to serve as the club's quality control coach, per MLB Trade Rumors and Bob Nightengale. The move brings Maldonado onto Detroit's major-league staff as he transitions directly into coaching.

Why it matters: Quality control coaches bridge analytics, game planning, and on-field execution between the front office and coaching staff. Maldonado's extensive experience handling pitching staffs and calling games behind the plate positions him for a long-term managerial track.

What to watch: Detroit will continue finalizing its coaching staff structure ahead of spring training.
