What happened: The United States have clinched first place in Group D at the 2026 World Cup after Paraguay's win over Türkiye locked in the standings. The result confirms the top seed for the USMNT, who had already done their part with a 2-0 win over Australia. The U.S. advanced as group winners even without Christian Pulisic in the lineup for that final group match.

Why it matters: Topping the group is the USMNT's first group-stage title in 16 years, and it shapes a more favorable knockout-round path by helping the side avoid the tournament's heaviest seeds early. The mark of a complete group campaign carries real momentum into the elimination rounds. It is a notable step forward for the United States' World Cup campaign.

What to watch: Attention now turns to the knockout round, where the U.S. bracket position is set as Group D winners once all final results are confirmed.
