What happened: Max Verstappen opened the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia weekend with the fastest lap of an uninterrupted first practice at Sepang, posting a 1:37.520. George Russell was second for Mercedes, 0.383 seconds back, while Isack Hadjar put the other Red Bull third on a 1:38.303.

Why it matters: The opening session put Red Bull on top immediately at F1's return stop in Malaysia and set the first pace marker for the rest of the weekend. Mercedes arrived with a new floor and sidepods, so Russell's margin to Verstappen is an early gauge of whether that package can shift the order.

By the numbers: Verstappen's 1:37.520 was 0.383 seconds quicker than Russell and 0.783 faster than Hadjar. Russell split the two Red Bulls in the top three, with Hadjar the only other driver within a second of Verstappen among the named frontrunners.

What to watch: Later practice should show whether Mercedes can close the gap on longer runs and qualifying trim. Track heat and surface wear at Sepang will shape how stable that order looks heading into qualifying.
