What happened: Shams Charania said the assignment would make James a primary initiator in Philadelphia's offense. The plan follows his two-year agreement, which includes a player option.

Why it matters: The alignment would put the offense in James' hands and shape how Philadelphia organizes its new lineup. It also gives the 76ers a defined playmaking role for their marquee addition.

What to watch: Training camp will show whether James handles the role full time or shares initiation duties.
