What happened: Fernando Alonso said contact with Williams' Alex Albon on the opening lap in Austin cost him four positions. The Aston Martin driver started 12th and dropped one place at the start as Esteban Ocon moved up from 15th. The clash left him with floor damage.

Why it matters: Alonso also criticised the "very low" quality of drivers in the bottom third of the field, and said Aston Martin must improve its car so he can start further up the grid. He had reached Q2 on Saturday despite a pit-exit car fire. Starting at the back, he said, carries that risk.

By the numbers: Start: 12th on the grid. Lap 1: lost four places, including one at the start.

What to watch: Aston Martin will look to fix the floor damage and improve qualifying pace before the next round.
