What happened: Connor Bedard signed a five-year, $75 million extension with the Blackhawks, one of the richest contracts in NHL history. The deal carries a $15 million average annual value.

Why it matters: The extension locks in Chicago's franchise center as the club builds around him, coming months after Bedard underwent shoulder surgery with a four-month recovery timeline. It also lands the same day the Blackhawks' Central Division rival Winnipeg remains stuck in trade talks over Connor Hellebuyck's no-trade clause.

What to watch: Bedard now heads into the 2026-27 season signed long-term as Chicago's centerpiece.
