What happened: Sky Sports F1's Martin Brundle called Kimi Antonelli 'outstanding' and spoke of 'pain' for Oscar Piastri in the 2026 cars. Brundle said Red Bull and Ferrari, and from time to time McLaren, have closed the pace advantage Mercedes enjoyed in the first half of the season. Antonelli could still win the World Championship, though perhaps not in the manner he would have wanted.

Why it matters: Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix from pole, with Charles Leclerc second and Max Verstappen third. Hamilton finished fourth, Norris fifth and Piastri seventh, so the Mercedes lead is being tested by several teams at once.

By the numbers: US GP top three: Antonelli, Leclerc, Verstappen. Leclerc's Austin podium puts him second only to Michael Schumacher for Ferrari podiums in F1 history. Hamilton started fifth and finished fourth; Piastri finished seventh.

What to watch: Watch whether Red Bull and Ferrari keep closing on Mercedes through the remaining rounds of the 2026 season.
