What happened: Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez addressed mounting criticism of the club's season with a provocative quote, questioning whether Real Madrid is expected to win the Champions League every year. The remark, relayed by Fabrizio Romano, frames the pressure on Madrid against the standards set across European football. It arrives alongside other Pérez comments touting recent silverware and disputing La Liga officiating.

Why it matters: Pérez's tone signals defensiveness around Madrid's trophy haul and the club's positioning versus Barcelona this season. The comments feed an ongoing narrative war between the Spanish giants and shape expectations heading into the offseason, including managerial speculation already swirling around the club. They also underscore how Champions League outcomes increasingly define perceived success at elite European clubs.
