What happened: Starting fifth on the Austin grid behind Kimi Antonelli, Max Verstappen, Isack Hadjar and Leclerc, Hamilton jumped Hadjar for fourth at lights out as the only runner on a used soft tire set. He held fourth through the checkered flag at Circuit of the Americas behind race winner Antonelli, runner-up Leclerc and third-place Verstappen.

Why it matters: The opening-stint deficit compounded weekend balance issues after Hamilton cited massive understeer in his Ferrari run to fourth in Austin and noted that recent set-up directions have cost him pace against his teammate. With the top five qualifiers separated by 0.276 seconds on Saturday, starting Sunday on compromised rubber left him without the early pace to challenge the podium finishers.

By the numbers: Hamilton qualified P5 within a 0.276-second top-five

What to watch: Ferrari carries its Friday practice tire-allocation review and baseline set-up work into the next round of the 2026 Formula 1 season as Hamilton seeks to close his opening-stint gap to Leclerc.
