What happened: Real Madrid confirmed the departure of head coach Álvaro Arbeloa on Tuesday, clearing the path for the return of José Mourinho. President Florentino Pérez secured the Portuguese manager from Benfica for a reported €15 million release fee following his successful re-election campaign.

Why it matters: The coaching change follows two consecutive seasons without major silverware, including a quarterfinal Champions League exit and a runner-up finish in La Liga. Mourinho’s appointment signals a shift back to high-discipline leadership as the club seeks to maximize a star-studded roster featuring Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham.

What to watch: Mourinho is expected to be formally presented at the Santiago Bernabéu this week to begin preseason planning for the 2026-27 campaign.
