What happened: Rex Ryan backed New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh ahead of J.J. McCarthy's first start with the team, calling the quarterback change a "smart play." The endorsement arrives prior to kickoff of New York's scheduled regular-season matchup against the Houston Texans.

Why it matters: Harbaugh turned to McCarthy as the Giants' starting quarterback after New York acquired the former Michigan passer from the Minnesota Vikings. The change under center comes as the Giants look to rebound from a loss to the New Orleans Saints and stabilize their offense.

What to watch: McCarthy takes the field for his debut start with New York when the Giants and Texans open play at 0-0 on Sunday.
