What happened: Broncos head coach Sean Payton met with reporters Wednesday as preparations opened for the AFC West contest against Kansas City. Denver enters the week after a 30-16 road win over the Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 25, while the Chiefs are coming off a 20-3 loss at the Seattle Seahawks on the same day.

Why it matters: The divisional meeting pits the top of the conference standings against a surging challenger. Payton, secured to a five-year contract extension in June, has kept his roster in the race despite limited flexibility ahead of the Nov. 10 NFL trade deadline.

By the numbers: Kansas City holds the No. 1 seed at 5-1 (L1), while Denver occupies the No. 5 seed at 5-2 with less than $5 million in available salary cap space.

What to watch: The Broncos and Chiefs meet on Sunday in Week 8 action.
