Why it matters: The 5-foot-9, 171-pound Downs would give New York a traditional slot and perimeter option for the prorated remainder of his $3.924 million rookie-deal salary and a projected late-round draft pick. With its slot receivers sidelined, New York has relied heavily on multi-tight-end packages and fullback Patrick Ricard. Adding Downs alongside Malik Nabers would bolster the passing attack, though it could reduce offensive snaps for Malachi Fields and tight end Isaiah Likely.

By the numbers: Downs has recorded at least 58 receptions in each of his three full seasons with Indianapolis and has 26 catches for 307 yards through seven games in 2026. Per Pro Football Focus, Likely has lined up in the slot on 255 of his 370 snaps this season, while Nabers has logged 50 slot snaps over the last three games (nearly 17 per contest). Third-seeded New York (4-2-1) has scored at least 27 points in four consecutive games and topped 400 total yards in three straight outings, while 12th-seeded Indianapolis (2-5) is on a three-game losing streak.

What to watch: The Giants have until the Nov. 10 NFL trade deadline to decide whether to make an offer for Downs and potentially pursue a long-term extension.
