What happened: Yahoo Sports ranked Byron Buxton, Tarik Skubal and Aroldis Chapman among the top 10 players contenders could pursue before the Aug. 3 trade deadline. The Rockies, Angels and Tigers were among the sellers name-checked as likely to move impact talent down the stretch. Honorable mentions include Luis Arraez, Matt Chapman, Casey Mize, Cj Abrams, Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, Josh Hader, Jose Soriano, Michael Wacha, Robbie Ray and Freddy Peralta.

Why it matters: Skubal enters the deadline as a back-to-back AL Cy Young winner, a credential that will drive his asking price well above the rest of the market. Chapman, at 38, is in his second straight All-Star season and has won two World Series rings, giving contenders a proven late-inning arm to chase. Buxton's continued presence near the top of the rankings underscores how much offensive thump he'd add to a lineup down the stretch.

What to watch: The trade deadline falls Aug. 3, with contenders expected to zero in on sellers like the Rockies and Angels as the market sorts out over the next three weeks.
