Eagles start Tanner McKee on Sunday vs. Panthers with Jalen Hurts out

Both of McKee's prior NFL starts came in Week 18 rest games

What happened: Tanner McKee will start at quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday after Jalen Hurts was ruled out with a superficial blood clot. While McKee started two previous NFL games, both came in Week 18 over the last two seasons when Philadelphia rested its starters after locking up playoff seeds.

Why it matters: Sunday marks McKee's first regular-season snaps outside garbage time or seeding-clinched finales. Philadelphia's quarterback depth is thin after the club released veteran backup Andy Dalton on Oct. 9, prior to Hurts' diagnosis. Fifth-round rookie Cole Payton out of North Dakota State is the only other quarterback currently on the active roster.

By the numbers: McKee enters Sunday with two career Week 18 starts across the previous two seasons. Payton was selected 178th overall in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft after starting one season at North Dakota State.

What to watch: Philadelphia faces Carolina on Sunday while evaluating whether to bring back Dalton for veteran depth behind McKee and Payton.
