What happened: Former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith has died at the age of 36, the team announced Saturday. Smith was a dominant defensive force during his early years in the league, helping lead the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII.

Why it matters: Smith was one of the most prolific pass rushers in NFL history during his peak, setting multiple franchise and league records for sack production. While his career was later interrupted by off-field struggles, his on-field impact remains legendary in San Francisco, where he still holds the franchise's single-season sack record.

What to watch: The NFL community is expected to honor Smith's memory in the coming days. Further details regarding the cause of death have not been released.
