What happened: Fabrizio Romano reports that José Mourinho and Real Madrid are in the final stages of negotiations, with direct contacts now taking place this week. Benfica want Mourinho to stay but are aware of the ongoing Real talks. Romano frames the move as imminent rather than speculative.

Why it matters: A Mourinho return would mark one of the most consequential managerial moves in modern European football, reuniting him with the club where he won La Liga in 2011-12. The timing aligns with Florentino Pérez publicly crediting the Mourinho era earlier this week, signaling boardroom alignment. It also reshapes the manager market across Europe heading into the summer window.

What to watch: Watch for an official Benfica statement and confirmation of Mourinho's exit terms. Romano's 'here we go' would mark the formal close.
