Saints release Zamir White six days after 49ers trade

Deion Jones is also being cut by San Francisco.

What happened: Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reported the move Sunday, six days after New Orleans acquired White. The deal sent linebacker Deion Jones to San Francisco in a straight player swap.

Why it matters: Neither player will reach Week 1 with the club that acquired him, effectively unwinding the exchange at roster cutdown. White's departure opens his roster spot before the initial 53 is set.

By the numbers: White gained 23 yards and scored one touchdown on four carries in his lone New Orleans preseason appearance. He totaled 736 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 198 carries across four seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders.

What to watch: White and Jones can pursue opportunities elsewhere as teams finalize their initial 53-man rosters.
