What happened: Washington has signed first-round linebacker Sonny Styles, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, to his rookie contract. The deal is reported at four years and $37.2 million, fully guaranteed. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirmed the signing alongside the team's announcement.

Why it matters: Getting the top-10 pick under contract before OTAs ramp up removes any holdout risk and clears Styles to participate fully in the offseason program. Washington invested heavily in defense this offseason, and locking in a fully guaranteed rookie deal at No. 7 is standard for the slot but still a meaningful step for roster planning. Styles is expected to compete for an immediate starting role at linebacker.

What to watch: Watch for Styles' first appearance at Commanders OTAs and how defensive coordinator usage signals his projected role. Rookie minicamp and training camp reps will indicate whether he opens the season as a Week 1 starter.
